The sun is shining, the lake is calling, and boating season is finally here. But before you hit the launch ramp, take a moment to make sure you—and your boat—are truly ready for the water. A little preparation now can save you a lot of frustration later, and more importantly, it keeps you and your passengers safe.
At Sacandaga Marine, we’ve seen it all—from boats launched without plugs to missing safety gear that could’ve meant serious trouble in an emergency. That’s why we’re sharing this essential pre-launch checklist to help you start your boating season right.
It seems simple, but forgetting to install the drain plug is one of the most common and costly mistakes boaters make. Before your boat goes anywhere near the water, double-check that the plug is securely in place.
The U.S. Coast Guard requires certain safety items to be on board every vessel. Here’s a quick list to review:
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): One Coast Guard-approved life jacket per person, plus a throwable device if your boat is over 16 feet.
Fire Extinguisher: Make sure it’s charged and not expired.
Sound-Producing Device: A whistle or horn is essential.
Visual Distress Signals: Flares or an orange flag for daytime and nighttime visibility.
Navigation Lights: Confirm all lights are working if you’ll be out near dusk or dawn.
Anchor: A properly sized anchor with adequate line is not only good practice, it’s essential for safety if you lose power or need to stay in place.
Pro tip: Store safety gear in easily accessible locations—not under seats or buried in storage compartments.
Check fuel lines and connections for leaks or wear.
Test the bilge pump.
Ensure the battery is fully charged and terminals are clean.
Confirm that your engine starts reliably before trailering to the lake.
Aside from safety equipment, make sure you’ve got the basics covered:
Dock lines and fenders
Anchor and anchor line
First-aid kit
Registration and insurance documents
A basic tool kit and spare parts (fuses, spark plugs, etc.)
Before launching, do a quick visual check:
Trailer tires inflated and secured
Tie-down straps removed
Drain plug in (yes, again!)
Gear loaded and secured
